How Often Should You Really Get a Massage?

This is one of the most common questions I get:

“How often should I be coming in?”

And the honest answer is…

It depends.

I know. Not very satisfying. But hear me out.

It Depends on Your Goals

Massage can serve different purposes, and frequency shifts depending on what you’re working toward.

If You’re in Pain

If you’re dealing with chronic neck tension, low back pain, headaches, or a flare-up of something acute, more frequent sessions at the beginning are usually helpful.

In these cases, I often recommend:

  • Every 1–2 weeks for a short period

  • Then reassessing as things improve

Why? Because your body responds best to consistent input. Waiting 6–8 weeks between sessions when you’re actively in pain is a bit like going to physical therapy once and hoping it sticks.

We’re helping your nervous system and soft tissue learn a new pattern. That takes repetition.

If You’re Managing Stress

If your primary goal is stress relief, sleep improvement, or nervous system regulation, once a month is a great rhythm for many people.

Monthly massage:

  • Keeps tension from accumulating

  • Supports circulation

  • Helps your body reset

Think of it like maintenance, not crisis management.

If You’re Very Active

If you hike Acadia regularly, lift weights, run, or have a physically demanding job (which a lot of people here in Maine do), your tissues are under consistent load.

In those cases, every 2–4 weeks often makes sense.

Your body is working hard. Regular bodywork helps it recover.

If You’re Just Coming for Relaxation

There is absolutely nothing wrong with coming in only when you feel like you need a reset.

Some people come seasonally.

Some come before (or after) big life events.

Some treat it as a once-in-a-while gift to themselves.

Massage doesn’t have to be medical to be valuable!

What I Tell My Clients

After years of working hands-on with people, I’ve learned this:

Consistency changes bodies.

Not intensity. Not one “deep” session. Not pushing through pain.

Gentle, consistent work over time helps muscles soften, posture improve, and stress patterns unwind.

But frequency should feel supportive, not stressful.

If coming every week feels financially or logistically overwhelming, that’s not helpful either! We can always work within what makes sense for your life.

A Good Rule of Thumb

If you’re unsure, start here:

  • In pain? Every 1–2 weeks short term.

  • Managing stress or maintaining? Every 3–4 weeks.

  • Just want occasional relaxation? As needed.

And we can adjust from there.

Massage isn’t about dependency. It’s about partnership with your body.

The goal is to help you feel more comfortable, more regulated, and more at home in yourself — whether that’s once a month or once a season.
